Night of the Living DeadRating: ★★★★½☆☆☆☆☆

Johnny and Barbra go to place flowers on their fathers grave in a rural Pennsylvania graveyard. Something odd and unexplained starts to happen during their trip and the recently deceased start to get up and attack the living; eating their flesh. Our main characters run to an old abandoned farm house and hole up hoping to last through the night. Soon other survivors begin to emerge from the surrounding area. They must learn to ban together and fight for survival and peace among themselves in order to survive the night of the living dead.

Reason to Watch

This movie made the zombie sub genre start. George Romero did a fantastic job on this low budget, yet thought provoking, film. Definitely worth the watch.

This movie was set, and shot, in Zelienople, Pennsylvania. It was shot in black and white in 1968. Also noted, the film has an impact on the Vietnam era along with some noted racism issues.

Most Memorable Quote(s)

Johnny: “They’re coming to get you, Barbra!”
Ben: “Now get the hell down in the cellar. You can be the boss down there, but I’m boss up here!”

What You Need to Get Through This Movie

In order to get through this movie:
1.) Watch it alone
2.) At night
3.) With no lights
4.) Minimal interruptions
5.) Lots of snacks!

Continuity: Ben finds a pair of shoes and puts them on Barbara’s feet, but in the very next shot where she’s sitting on the couch, she is not wearing shoes nor are they any in the shot with her.

Educational Content

1.) Never wear heels in rural PA.
2.) Shock can turn you into a blithering idiot.
3.) Little girls can never be trusted.
4.) Spades: Not just for gardening!

Justification for Rating

I would give it a 9/10 just because it’s still a great movie by today’s standards. We still fight a lot of the same issues. Great gore! Who wouldn’t want to see a movie that shocked the masses?
