Review

It seems that times have not changed since the 1960s, we still warn our kids about stranger danger, when we should really be looking out for Uncle Touchy Feely. Anyway this is a disturbing little film directed at parents telling them to tell their children to stay away from strangers lest they be raped and killed. Shocking? Yes. And you haven’t even seen the real crime photos yet. Although the film is firm on telling parents that they are the ones who should warn their children many kids were subjected to this film at school leaving mental scares and nightmares that would last rest of their life. Kind of ironic, damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.

Reason to Watch

Well I’m sick in the head so 1960s films about kiddie fiddlers are hilarious. Sure this isn’t the brilliant and far more humorous Boys Beware, but it is still lots of fun watching the Terminator like molester pursue little girls through the woods… that said the ending is a buzz kill.

Context

In the 1950s/60s there was not a problem that existed that could not be solved by a film warning you about it. Among the gods of this genre were Sid Davis, however this film was produced by the Highway Safety Foundation, a company much better known for it’s gory car crash videos used in driver’s ed class.

After the girls have been missing 2 hours the narrator says “The grim face of the police brings home the reality of what they might be dealing with.” so much for optimism.

What you need to get through this movie

You need to be in the mind of a molester to enjoy this film. I suggest a bag of sweets, dark glasses, a bow tie and a bucket to vomit in at the climax.

Trivia

This film was swiftly removed after being released. Apparently you don’t need to see the corpses of dead girls to nail a point home.

Campy classic, but the real world photos of dead girls covered in blood just makes it a little more serious. So enjoy part 1, but prepare for part 2.

Unfortunately one day she meets an accident.As a result she looses her beautiful appearance. Later a doctor looks after her and give her a good look this whole process involves  many horrible scenes.To give her a good appearance the doctor will give her additional treatments using glands taken from murdered women.

These scenes are somewhat horrible to watch.In this period,she fells in love with him.The film has a somewhat low quality and poorly directed. This film is a mixture of horror and fiction. This is one of the horror movies released in the year 1960.”

Some of the scenes in the movie are poorly directed but still the story is interesting.The doctor’s action is pretty good. The doctor’s ability to turn out as a monster is really surprising. But during all this process the doctor cares her a lot and determines himself to do anything to bring Stripper Jeannette Morineau a good appearance.This is really a good thing but that caring seems to be out of bounds in some scenes. The horror was also depicted neatly ,the people who like to watch horror movies can watch this.The method of his treatment caused many people to think in a different way.

Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! What, no ghost with the most? I guess cirrhosis will kill even the hardiest of cult movies. Tim Burton’s ability to turn almost anything he touches into something not only instantly cultish, but also beautiful, is a testament to his sick fascination with bad science fiction films and terrible horror movies. Beetlejuice is enduring, which I think is partly due to the use of Belafonte island dance numbers in a comedy movie made “in-the-style-of” a horror film, and partly because even the bad guy seems like someone you would want to share a bottle of bourbon with. Not only is Beetlejuice great to have on as background noise at your Halloween party, but it is also something with which you can kick-start your kid’s education in cult movies.

Halloween

For God’s sake, it’s called Halloween, a no-brainer for a Halloween list maker. Anyway, Halloween is not just a convenient title for selling theatre seats in October, but it was also the film that created the teen babysitter slasher cliché. Now clichés are spawned from actual memorable moments, and John Carpenter’s low budget masterpiece has become a part of Americana. Jamie Lee Curtis being terrorized by Nick Castle (the same guy who directed Dennis the Menace and Major Payne – VERY scary) in an expressionless white mask created a template for future slasher films. If you’ve ever wondered where the camera angles and female stereotypes of Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street came from, look no further – but be aware, the opening credits are terrible.

Night of the Living Dead

This 1968 George A. Romero über-classic cult film makes lethargic, brain hungry, stiff, undead, Reagan-loving nursing home rejects the scariest predators a small town in broke-ass PA has ever seen. I, personally, love zombie movies, and what better than one of the originals? But there is something that always bothers me about the whole zombie genre: they just don’t seem that tough. You would think that even decrepit old Stephen Hawking and pansy Andy Dick could fight at lest 60 or 70 of them, let alone a home full of adults including a black man (and we’re not talking black man like Sammy Davis, Jr; I mean like lock up your white women because you know if they go black they really aren’t going back, black man).

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Before Johnny Depp was swashbuckling his way into another awful Jerry Bruckheimer movie, he was dodging his way from child killer and winner of the 1984 Captain Grody Face Award. Freddy Kruger, one part wolverine, one part Edward Scissorhands (no Johnny Depp pun intended), and much like Helen Keller, is a hero to all psychotic serial killing burn victims. I think the premise of this movie should be well known to all of us so I will give you a little tip on how to make this movie really scary. I like to pop a hand full of melatonin and wash it down with a nice glass of warm milk and pray to God that I don’t crap myself.

Blonde and bubbly, Phoebe Legere certainly didn’t have enough screen time in this Toxie flick. Even though she later went on to be married by Hunter S. Thompson to a champion bull (look it up), Legere was the perfect compliment to Toxie’s absolute disgustingness.

Poor fellow Henry Spencer has knocked up Mary X and her insane parents insist that he now has to do the right thing. The only problem is, the baby is a weird mutant sheep thing, incessantly crying and getting a disgustiing cough every ten seconds. Yech!! What’s a guy to do but escape into a fantasy world of, well, imaginary seed pod worms, gigantic sperm, and mash potato-cheeked singing whores? That’s what, I guess.

Reason to Watch

Eraserhead is another cult film right of passage. Before I saw this, I thought movies were movies and art was art, and never the twain shall meet. Eraserhead changed my perspective, all right.

Context

The late seventies is when the midnight movie came into being, and Eraserhead, along with El Topo, is the seminal midnight arthouse movie.

Having watched this movie in virtually all forms of altered states of consciousness, I think this is going to be the rare CultFlicks movies where complete sobriety is acceptable. It’s weird enough to need all of your undivided attention.

• The man who controls Henry Spencer’s brain later married Sissy Spacek.
• The baby was laid to rest in a mock funeral and bureid in an unknown location following the completetion of this film.
• The Pixies covered the song performed by the lady in the radiator.

Review

If you’ve ever wondered, “I wonder what  Francis Ford Coppola was doing before The Godfather, one of the greatest films in history of people making films ever?”, then look no further than Dementia 13. Yes, folks, from low budget b-film to “Greatest Filmmaker Ever” in under a decade. You, too, can start out making “Adult Features”, work your way into “Cult Horror”, and then go on to define a genre. But most likely not. D-13 is not a terrible movie; it’s got that “a director was here” feel to it, with some nifty camera angles and a couple of cool shots, but for every glimpse of a promising director, you have two moments of a drunken screenwriter. I was either too intoxicated or not intoxicated enough to understand what was going on. For the first quarter of the movie I was convinced it was about a woman trying to cover up the accidental death of her husband so she could get some money, somehow… but then she is killed off by a random bad guy and we’re in a psycho killer plot line, which later changes to a family revenge story. I actually have to recommend this because it is so badly written that you have to see it to believe it, especially considering the man who wrote it went on to the Godfather series and Apocalypse Now.

Reason to Watch

The same writer and director as The Godfather, sixties-sexy underwear, a cool trick ending, and the most confusing plot ever. There is also a scene in which a poacher wanders down a stream looking for rabbits, and is then axe-chopped to death… I’m pretty sure it’s the longest, most boring scene in history -- hysterical.

Context

This is not your typical Roger Corman Edgar Alan Poe film, nor is it another American International teen slasher, and that’s all Coppola. He was only 24 when D-13 was released. I’m way older than that and will never make anything half as good as his first, crappy try.

What you need to get through this movie

If you are not a pot smoker I would recommend becoming one to get through this film. Or, if you are a pot smoker and who wants to show someone how confusing being high is, make them watch Dementia 13.

Trivia

The film did not live up to American Internationals’ ARKOFF formula (Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy, and Fornication). In fact, Roger Corman, the producer, stormed out of the film’s first screening because it didn’t have enough axe-murdering. The whole poacher scene was added later (shot by a different director) just to add more Killing. Clearly, one of many poor decisions.

Educational Content

1. Your husband has to be alive in order for you to gain an inheritance.
2. “He’s on business” is a good enough excuse for months of absence.
3. You can perfectly time how long a rope will degrade under water.
4. Doctors are like private investigators, only much more prepared to abuse and torture those they interrogate.
5. Axe murderers seem perfectly normal during the day, being able to converse intelligently and politely, but at night, while murdering, they are babbling insane monsters who make little to no sense.

Justification for Rating

D-13 is not unwatchable… I have to give it 2 and a half stars, one for the directing, one for the trick ending and half for the script.

Review

This 1959 Roger Corman film is a great example of B-Movies gone good. Walter Paisley is an inept artist working as a busboy at The Yellow Door, the heppest beatnik club around. When he accidentally kills his landlord’s cat, inspiration strikes and his fame is assured.

Reason to Watch

A Bucket of Blood may have some of the most respectful, yet hilarious, depictions of fifties beatniks in movie. King Beatnik’s poetry is, actually, quite brilliant, though only written by a lowly screenwriter for the film. Also, look for Beatniks in tuxedos and sandals, Far out, man.

Context

Them crazy beatniks are cool, man, cool. In the late fifties, you either loved them or hated them. This movie could definitely help one decide.

Most memorable quote(s)

“Where are John, Joe, Jake, Jim, jerk? Dead, dead, dead! They were not born, before they were born, they were not born. Where are Leonardo, Rembrandt, Ludwig? Alive! Alive! Alive! They were born!”

What you need to get through this movie

Like, wheat germ and gin, man.

• Dick Miller, who played a character named Walter Paisley a total of six times, was Monster Joe in Pulp Fictions, but his part was cut out before the film premiered.
