Review

The Sadist has been a well-kept secret of movie and a top-notch thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat in theater.
The sadist offers simple story and another advantage of the sadist is its cinematography.
Only during the movie’s overly long climax did the souffle start to collapse.
For the film’s first hour, it’s very tense and anxious, but the stupidity of our heroes gets too extreme during the finale.
After a few mysterious minutes during which no help can be found at a service station, the culprit emerges: a snot-nosed punk with a gun and his dopey girlfriend.

Reason to Watch

The sadist climax is too long and the first hour of the film is too tense. one of the most underrated B-movies ever.

Context

The Sadist, the low budget debut feature of one James Landis. It’s partly the content, sure, but the real smack to the senses comes from the knowledge that it was made and released back in 1963.

Most Memorable Quote(s)

The words of a sadist, one of the most disruptive elements in human society. To have complete mastery over another, to make him a helpless object, to humiliate him, to enslave, to inflict moral insanity upon the innocent. That is his objective, and his twisted pleasure!

What You Need to Get Through This Movie

Three people driving into Los Angeles for a Dodgers game have car trouble and pull off into an old wrecking.

Trivia

This low-budget film was noted for its excellent cinematography. It was the first American film for Vilmos Zsigmond who was working under the name William Zsigmond

Educational Content

It will not have any educational content.

Justification for Rating

“The Sadist” is purty durn good moovie

Review

This film starts out in a morgue with two doctors feeling bad because of the task assign to them . The two doctors must find out what happened to the young wopman on the table who as died. Soon the scene is one where the young woman Laura is telling the story of her life and death. We soon find out that Laura was married to the son of a doctor and this is no happy marriage. Ward her husband wants out and his father is willing to help. Laura tells us that she was held against her will while the doctor and his son attempted to drive her mad or scared her to death. Entered into the story is an ex detective whose awaiting a murder to redeem himself, a noisy housemaid , a reporter with his brainless girlfriend and the creepy hyptonist with his dwarf friend who know a secret. As the movie moves along we learn that Laura may have been married before and betrayed her first husband to the Nazi’s. Is it her new husband and his father trying to scare her to death or the spirit of her first husband come back from the dead?

Reason to Watch

Even though the script is horrific. One shouldn’t miss Scared to Death for the movie is fun. I mean where else can you find so many sany characters under one roof. No one is trying for an Oscar in this movie so all you get is a bunch of actors just attempting to remember there lines. The great part is that you get to watch as they try to finish this movie. I couldn’t even figure out what the dwarf’s name was the detective keeps calling him Indigo while Lugosi calls hom Ingo. There is also a great scene where Indigo or Inigo stomps the detective foot which is straight out of the three stooges.

Context

The movie was released in 1947 post WWll hence the reference to the Nazi’s. The women in the movie are typicall women of movies from this era helpless with know direction.

Most Memorable Quote(s)

1. “Pardon me, Professor, but didn’t I just see you outside baying at the moon.
2.The scene where the maid attempts to announce the arrival of Leonide. He tells her. My dear girl, if I allowed myself to be announced, I doubt I would be recieved anywhere.

What You Need to Get Through This Movie

You will need a foley implanted in your bladder if you plan to watch this movie on some late night movie channel and not on dvd. You need the foley for if you get up to go to the restroom you’ll miss some thing and be totally confused. Beyond confused you’ll miss good laugh scenes. Oh, don’t forget your 3D glasses. No, the films not in 3D but you might want them for the blue or green mask collage that keeps appearing. And don’t forget earplugs to drown out the spooky music that comes for no reason.

Trivia

One of only three films in color Bela Lugosi ever appeared in. In fact, Scared to Death, which was filmed in Cinecolor is the only color film in which Bela Lugosi was the star.

Educational Content

1. Never knew a doctor could listen to your heart and discover you were hypnotised.
2. This film will encourage you to stop drinking or find a new group of friends after you witness poor Wards fate of an unplanned marriage after to much partying.
3. Never let a creepy guy and a dwarf who are dressed alike enter your home you just know troubles coming.
4. Only time I’ve ever witnessed someone look at a BW photo and still figure out colors in the photo.

Justification for Rating

I give Scared to Death a five for it’s a movie that attemps to hold on to what it set out to be. A great cheesy B- movie and that folks is just what it is. There no over acting for the actors in this movie for theres no real script in the first place. But like I said everyone tries and thats what makes a great movie.

Review

Due to the radioactive fallout from a returning space probe, dead bodies are returning to “life” and stalking human prey, eating their victims once they catch up to them. A group of disparate people barricade themselves inside a farmhouse hoping to be rescued from these beings. I’m sure that at the time of its release, this classic, influential movie shocked and repulsed viewers. Time, and countless pale imitations, have taken some of its impact away, but it’s still great viewing. The budget – which I can believe was very low – only serves to gives the movie an almost realistic feel. Acting is very sharp, especially from top-billed Duane Jones, cast in what must have been the first (or one of the first) instances of a horror movie having an African-American hero. The only sour note may be that the leading female character, played by Judith O’Dea, is unfortunately one-note – wimpy and useless. This movie is actually more genuinely spooky than many of the more glossier and explicit horror movies released since. In fact, in a similar fashion to Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”, the movie makes quite a good use out of a low budget, and it’s entertaining throughout. Co-writer / director George A. Romero and co-writer John Russo have bit parts; co-stars Karl Hardman (who plays ‘Harry Cooper’) and Russell Streiner (who appears uncredited as ‘Johnny’) were the movie’s producers. Remade by Romero in 1990; followed by “Dawn of the Dead” in 1978 and “Day of the Dead” in 1985 and then a slew of “Return of the Living Dead” feature

Most Memorable Quote(s)

I liked every line by this writer.

What You Need to Get Through This Movie

My friends forced me to watch this.

Educational Content

I love the way it is directed.

Justification for Rating

Review

I guess the pitch went something like “It’s Dragnet meets Frankenstien starring Lon Chaney” To which the studio said,”Senior” to which the director said, “Technically no, but he will be dropping ‘Jr.’ for his credit.” It is the story of Charles ‘Butcher’ Benton (Lon Chaney) who having been stitched up by his partners in crime and now faces the death penalty for his part in a payroll truck robbery. However where there is a corpse there is a scientist looking to experiment. In this case Prof. Bradshaw wants to cure cancer and his method is to pump 300,000 volts of electricity into the corpse (not really sure on how this is suppose to cure cancer, but then I’m not a doctor). This brings the Butcher back to life, but stronger than ever and seemingly invulnerable, also his vocal cords got fried so he can’t speak, but his brain still functions and can think of nothing but revenge. The cops are soon on his trial but finding out he is impervious to bullets they have to bring out the big guns, bazookas and flame throwers. This all tasty film noir, LA streets, LA sewers, stock shots of police cars, an unstoppable monster with crazy eyes and a carnie thrown in for good measure. What’s not to like?

Reason to Watch

Unlike most B-Movies this actually has a plot you can follow, partly because everyone talks in exposition and partly because the plot is basically revenge. There nothing for the dames to scared about as only bad guys get it, by either being thrown or stepped on.

Context

It is the mid-fifties, Dragnet is in its prime on TV and Lon Chaney has started to get on a bit, his alcohol problem is not yet public knowledge, but he was facing hard times, thus dropping the “Jr” from his name to trade on the success of his father.

Most Memorable Quote(s)

Dick: I just got you fired.
Eva: Why?
Dick: I figured being my wife would take up most of your time.

What You Need to Get Through This Movie

This is a film you have watch like hard nosed detective, so that would a bottle of whiskey, and Dames who love it when you speak condescendingly to them.

Trivia

Lon Chaney Jr. (no relation to real life Bond villain Dick Cheney) spend much of his life chasing the fame of his father, silent god of the silver screen Lon Chaney Sr. In this film he attempts to out silence his father by speaking as little as possible and making it all about the eyes. Despite the tagline “300,000 volts of Horror!” they actually only get up to 278,000.

Educational Content

1. Scientists have caused more death and destru…1. Scientists have caused more death and destruction trying to cure cancer than cancer could ever done alone.
2. Lon Chaney was possibly paid by the word since after the opening scene he never speaks again.
3. Film maker Tip: If the plot makes no sense just turn your horror into a detective story and have the whole film narrated.
4. Mob guys squeal like little girls when they get picked up by Granddads.
5. You can find better looking dames trying hustle you into a fixing their flat tire than you can in burlesque show.

Justification for Rating

Over explained and predictable, this film is easy to watch because it just over an hour long. Fun can be had by dubbing in lines for the silent Lon Chaney.

Review

If you’ve ever wondered, “I wonder what Francis Ford Coppola was doing before The Godfather, one of the greatest films in history of people making films ever?”, then look no further than Dementia 13. Yes, folks, from low budget b-film to “Greatest Filmmaker Ever” in under a decade. You, too, can start out making “Adult Features”, work your way into “Cult Horror”, and then go on to define a genre. But most likely not. D-13 is not a terrible movie; it’s got that “a director was here” feel to it, with some nifty camera angles and a couple of cool shots, but for every glimpse of a promising director, you have two moments of a drunken screenwriter. I was either too intoxicated or not intoxicated enough to understand what was going on. For the first quarter of the movie I was convinced it was about a woman trying to cover up the accidental death of her husband so she could get some money, somehow… but then she is killed off by a random bad guy and we’re in a psycho killer plot line, which later changes to a family revenge story. I actually have to recommend this because it is so badly written that you have to see it to believe it, especially considering the man who wrote it went on to the Godfather series and Apocalypse Now.

Reason to Watch

The same writer and director as The Godfather, sixties-sexy underwear, a cool trick ending, and the most confusing plot ever. There is also a scene in which a poacher wanders down a stream looking for rabbits, and is then axe-chopped to death… I’m pretty sure it’s the longest, most boring scene in history – hysterical.

Context

This is not your typical Roger Corman Edgar Alan Poe film, nor is it another American International teen slasher, and that’s all Coppola. He was only 24 when D-13 was released. I’m way older than that and will never make anything half as good as his first, crappy try.

Most memorable quote(s)

“You can tell she’s been raised on promises.”

What you need to get through this movie

If you are not a pot smoker I would recommend becoming one to get through this film. Or, if you are a pot smoker and who wants to show someone how confusing being high is, make them watch Dementia 13.

Trivia

The film did not live up to American Internationals’ ARKOFF formula (Action, Revolution, Killing, Oratory, Fantasy, and Fornication). In fact, Roger Corman, the producer, stormed out of the film’s first screening because it didn’t have enough axe-murdering. The whole poacher scene was added later (shot by a different director) just to add more Killing. Clearly, one of many poor decisions.

Educational Content

Your husband has to be alive in order for you to gain an inheritance.

“He’s on business” is a good enough excuse for months of absence.

You can perfectly time how long a rope will degrade under water.

Doctors are like private investigators, only much more prepared to abuse and torture those they interrogate.

Axe murderers seem perfectly normal during the day, being able to converse intelligently and politely, but at night, while murdering, they are babbling insane monsters who make little to no sense.

Justification for Rating

D-13 is not unwatchable… I have to give it 2 and a half stars, one for the directing, one for the trick ending and half for the script.
